Violin Lessons : Class 4 - Holding the Violin

Find a comfortable chair (preferable unpadded). When you sit, your feet should be placed apart, right below your shoulders. Position them in such a way so that you get a good balance while seated. I have come across some violin lessons at certain music schools that say that you should place one foot in front of the other, but there are very few famous violinists that use this posture.

Place the end of the violin (the violin’s bottom) on your left collarbone. Turn your head slightly to the left so that your chin is right above the chin-rest. While holding the violin, your left elbow should be above your left knee. The violin should be parallel to your left thigh. After that, rest the neck of the violin in the V crevice between your left thumb and index finger.
