Violin Lessons : Class 5 - Finger Placement

In this lesson we will learn finger placement of the fingerboard. The position of your left thumb and your left index finger will be the most important. Your thumb should preferably be on the side of the neck instead of below it. If you have small hands where your little finger is having some difficulty reaching the board, your can lower your thumb to a position below the neck.

As for your index finger, the left side of your index finger should be in contact with the string, not the middle part, nor the right part. When the left tip of your index finger is in contact with the string, this will create a comfortable alignment for the rest of your fingers.

For balance, your wrist/hand should be below your middle and ring finger at all times, regardless the finger configuration. This position creates a good balance while you play the violin.
